The words ‘Luxury car’ and ‘Hybrid’ don’t seem to make very good bed fellows but Fisker Automotive could turn peoples perceptions about this concept. Founded by Henrik Fisker this independent Californian start up has a very good chance of breaking the Luxury Hybrid market thanks to several factors. Henrik Fisker is best know for designing the Aston Martin DB9, V8 Vantage and BMW Z8 which makes their cars miles ahead of the competition. Their executive board is loaded with veterans from the motor industry so there is no shortage of experience and lastly they received a $600 million loan from the US Government for research into alternative energies which was much more than what Tesla received.
The ‘Surf’ is Fisker’s third car in their collection and although it is heavily modeled on their 4 door salon car the ‘Karma’, Fisker see it as a 5 door luxury wagon/hatchback.
“The Surf is a first-of-its-kind eco-friendly lifestyle vehicle that offers space, performance and luxury design for people who live an active, environmentally conscious lifestyle and like to drive beautiful cars,” explains Henrik Fisker, CEO and Design Director
Running on electric alone the Surf can travel up to 50 miles and if you need to go further its turbocharged 4 cylinder engine will power up and charge the batteries for a 300 mile total range. With 403 horses under it’s bonnet and a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph, it’s no Prius.
